Mbombela Golf Club, formerly Nelspruit Golf Club, was established in November 1928 and relocated in 1939 to its current site in Nelspruit’s suburban rocky terrain. Designed by Bob Grimsdell, the course has a unique history, initially starting as a 9-hole layout for almost 30 years until Grimsdell returned to complete the second nine in 1967-68. In 1998, Peter Matcovitch undertook course upgrades, coinciding with the establishment of the adjacent “Matumi Golf Estate.”
Measuring 6,063 meters with a par of 71, Mbombela Golf Club offers a manageable challenge. The front nine begins unconventionally with varying par holes before concluding with four consecutive par 4s. The back nine predominantly features uphill or downhill play, with the standout hole being the 498-meter 14th, the sole par 5 on this stretch. It presents golfers with an elevated tee, a tree-lined fairway, and a green guarded by bunkers, providing an opportunity for aggressive play or a conservative approach, depending on one’s skill level.
