The River Club Golf Course

Links Rd, Driefontein 41-Ir, Sandton, 2191, South Africa

Founded in 1967 by businessman Punch Barlow, The River Club Golf Course is an ultra-exclusive golf club situated in the affluent Sandton district of Johannesburg. Known as “the Augusta National of South Africa,” this prestigious club does not offer a pay-and-play facility, meaning that access is limited to members and their guests, with caddies being compulsory.

Golfers lucky enough to play here will encounter tree-lined fairways, intriguing bunker complexes, and top-notch greens laid out over gently undulating terrain. The course features several water hazards, with the Braamfontein Spruit flowing through the property and incorporated into the design of multiple holes.

Renowned golf commentator Ewan Murray has praised The River Club, ranking it among the top ten courses in the world and highlighting its last five holes as possibly the best finishing stretch in golf. Starting with the shortest par three at the 14th and culminating in the challenging par four at the 18th, where the home green lies just beyond a lily pond, these holes are some of the most demanding in the country.
