Established in 1991 and operated by the Thai military, Wing 23 Golf Club introduced the game of golf to this corner of North-Eastern Thailand. This compact 9-hole course offers a flat and enjoyable experience, perfect for a day of leisurely play, particularly suited to less competitive golfers.
As is typical of traditional courses, walking is the norm here, as golf carts are not available. However, the advantage lies in the close proximity of all the holes and the generous shade provided by numerous large trees, offering respite from the sun’s rays. Caddies play a pivotal role, handling the bulk of the heavy lifting with golf bags and providing valuable guidance on the greens.
While most holes are straightforward, a few feature challenging bunker complexes around the greens. The standout holes include the seventh, a par-5 with a dogleg right and a creek to navigate on the drive, and the eighth, a par-4 with a dogleg left and two imposing bunkers guarding the green. Maintenance standards may not be on par with international courses, especially after heavy rainfall, but the green fees are budget-friendly.
In 2010, a well-appointed clubhouse was added, featuring a pro shop, restaurant, and modern locker rooms. All in all, Wing 23 Golf Club presents an excellent way to spend a relaxed Sunday afternoon in Udon Thani, and with green fees priced at just USD 10, it remains an affordable option for golf enthusiasts.
